Suspected terrorists arrested on KLM plane in Germany

German police raided an Amsterdam-bound KLM jet at Cologne airport on Friday and arrested two men suspected of planning to take part in terrorist attacks.

KLM Flight 1804 had been cleared for takeoff when police boarded the aircraft at 6.55am and arrested a 23-year-old Somali and a 24-year-old German born in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.

Authorities had obtained a suicide note written by the men that stated they wanted to take part in jihad – or holy war – and die in a terrorist attack, said Katharina Breuer, a spokeswoman for North Rhine-Westphalia state police.

Police had reportedly been trailing the pair for months but said there is no evidence that the men had plans to hijack the plane.

The arrests come on the heels of Thursday’s public appeal by German police for help tracking down two missing Islamists suspected of belonging to the terrorist group Islamic Jihad Union.

German national Eric Beininger, 21, and Houssain al-Malla, a 23-year-old Lebanese, were reportedly last seen in the Pakistan-Afghan border region, and police suspect the pair may have secretly returned to Germany.

Mr Breininger, who is from the western German state of Saarland, had recorded an internet video in which he spoke of carrying out a suicide attack and supported jihad. Security officials said, however, that they do not have information about concrete plans or targets.

The 46 remaining passengers were evacuated from the plane and their luggage checked before they re-boarded and proceeded to Amsterdam.
